Girl Scout impacts local community at Glenhope

Aurora Tong Parents and students at Glenhope Elementary School were called together for a special presentation on recommendations for gifted and talented students from a girl scout from Cross Timbers Middle School. Aurora Tong, a seventh-grade student, used her Girl Scout project, combined with her experience in the ASPIRE Academy, as an opportunity to impact the community at Glenhope.

Aurora researched and donated books to students in the ASPIRE Academy that she felt would be beneficial to their attitudes about learning, as well as give them a positive outlook of themselves. Genres of books included were self-help books, books with gifted children as the main character, and books about being different and that being okay.

“I noticed some gifted kids think and act differently,” said Aurora, “and because of these differences, they often feel left out and alone. So I wanted to help by letting them know that it is okay to be different.”

Aurora’s project emphasizes the goals of LEAD 2021, the district’s strategic plan, to better prepare students for the current and future world they will live in. More specifically, Aurora’s project highlights the key strategic objective that all students will be positive participants in their local communities and our global society.

“Even if this project only helps one child feel better about him or herself, then this project is a success,” Tong said.
