Paper, tape, markers, and you have a work of art
Students at Grapevine Elementary School have been creating unique name sculptures in their art class, as a way to kick off the year and get to know each other.
"Art isn't just flat, painting or drawing," said Justin Burns, GES art teacher. "It's all different mediums. It's all about them [the students]. You say, 'Here's the idea, how will you put it together?' I only help pull out their ideas."
When asked what their favorite part of the project way, students explained that the deciding where to place the letters, using their favorite colors, or simply just creating art is they've most enjoyed.
One studente explained: "My favorite part was making the art because I like art a lot. Art puts your feelings on a piece of paper and it's awesome to look at."
Burns explained that he wanted to come oup with a fun project for the beginning of the school year. He felt creating name sculptures could also serve as a way to help students learn more about their peers. Prior to their names, the students created sculptures out of tape and paper to describe what they did this past summer. Burns explained that sculpting their names gives the students an opportunity to make a more individualized creation. In the coming weeks, the students will create sculptures from zip ties.
