GCISD Reads
GCISD students, staff, and families recently kicked off GCISD Reads for the 2016-2017 school year. Through this reading challenge, students can work to build a love for reading while they read a variety of books this school year. Students will keep track of the number of pages they read, and have until May 1, 2017 to reach their goals. The reading challenge is for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“We initiated GCISD Reads as a way to promote students' independent reading,” said Dr. Suzanne Newell, GCISD director of humanities. “This initiative is working to spotlight the importance of reading because of how it can impact a student's ability to be successful in other subjects, to understand other cultures and time periods, to increase vocabulary and reading fluency, and to just relax.”

Reading for the challenge can take place during and outside the school day using paper and electronic materials. Students are encouraged to read books from a variety of categories, such as fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, e-books and more.

“We have seen many positive outgrowths of the promotion of reading,” Newell said, who noted that school libraries are busier than ever and students are requesting more independent reading time in class. “These are great indicators that GCISD is becoming a very ‘readerly’ community,” she added.

As students complete their goals, they will receive a district certificate in May. Additionally, some classrooms and campuses sponsor their own celebrations of these accomplishments.
