Two GCISD students, Eric Tong and Garrett Wezniak, participated in the Who Wants to Be a Mathematician competition at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Tong, a 5th grader from Glenhope Elementary, finished in third place in his round and won a Calculus textbook. Wezniak, a senior from Colleyville Heritage High School, tied for second place in his round, winning Maple 2016 (math software).

“Our GCISD students performed well alongside students from other districts and schools in the Metroplex,” said Jennifer Hylemon, GCISD director of math. “Garrett answered more questions correctly than most other students in the competition. Eric explained his reasoning using mathematically precise language when called upon by the moderator in front of a crowd of students and adults. I am so proud of the efforts of these students!”

Questions for the contest were selected from areas of pre-calculus including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, history of mathematics, combinatorics, and probability.  Tong and Wezniak were two of eight students selected for the competition based on their high scores on a qualifying test provided by the American Mathematical Society.
