Medal of Honor recipient visits GCISD schools
Students at both Cannon Elementary: A GCISD STEM School and Grapevine Middle School welcomed a special visit from Medal of Honor Recipient Staff Sergeant Leroy Petry. Staff Sergeant Petry shared his experiences as a U.S. veteran, about losing his hand in combat, as well as about having a prosthetic hand.
Petry earned his medal after selflessly picking up and throwing a grenade away from his team members while in Afghanistan in May 2008--a decision that cost him his right hand as the grenade detonated seconds after it had been thrown.
Additional guests to the schools included Military Concert Entertainer Jeff Vezain, Retired Marine Major William Mimiaga, and USAF Lt. Colonel ROTC Teacher Bob Marasco.
Students at GMS also welcomed local first responders as honored guests to the school. Upon entering the gym, the first responders were greeted with a standing ovation and cheers by the GMS students.
